  Indulge me if the previous answer was too dry, I know that you know all the 
arguments presented in those pages. I have a tooth that is not letting me to 
sleep. :-\

  The idea of the change was to use a more modern, or probably more 
mainstream, language related with releases.
  It is easier to talk about alpha, beta and rc than just about a pre-release, 
a concept that I seldom see outside lyx.

  Using this language we pass a different message regarding the stabilization 
of our code base to the outside.
