  It is a question of following the same nomenclature as other projects. And 
it indicates more clearly the degree of confidence that we have in the 
release.

alpha -> beta -> rc (release candidate)

  I like this scheme more than simply

pre1 -> pre2 -> ... -> pre7

  A list of high profile projects that follow this scheme: python, mozilla 
(seamonkey and firefox), openSUSE, ...
