I'm uncertain what to do with the LyX/Mac installer for 1.5.0. In the
past, this installer has been needed to remove some obsolete files
installed with early versions of LyX/Mac-1.3 (1.3.3?), and install
the necessary TeX files that LyX relies on. I have also used it to
copy the lyx user directory to a new location named using the LyX
version number: LyX (for 1.3.x), LyX-1.4 (for 1.4.x), and now LyX-1.5
(for 1.5.x). This has been done to preserve backward compatibility.
Moving this directory around requires also updating the preferences
file to change the paths appropriately.
However, I do not have the time to maintain backwards compatibility,
and I need to simplify. My intent, therefore, is to assume that if
there is an existing lyx user directory, it is named LyX-1.4. If that
folder exists, the installer will copy it to LyX-1.5 and update the
preferences file; if not, the installer will do nothing. I also plan
to assume that the obsolete files don't need to be removed. The
necessary TeX files will also be installed in the appropriate place
(~/Library/texmf/tex/latex).
Does that seem reasonable? (Of course, if someone wants to revamp the
LyX/Mac installer, I'd be happy to turn it over. My time for working
on LyX is increasingly limited these days.)
