I think your attack was bad. Naugthy Bo, bad Bo! SCNR :-)
I am too old to be called naughty, but I agree that I could be more diplomatic. For various reasons, I have a strong feelings against forking.
I've gotten the impression Uwe is upset because he feels Joost took his code, got it in SVN and now the official installer is "Joost's", although the original initiative was Uwe's, and he did a *lot* of the work (not even counting all the support/troubleshooting Uwe has done later on). So it really is about acknowledgments from peers.
I guess Joost is at a better position to comment on this but talking about whose installer is kind of silly for a GPL project. We have to call Joost or Uwe's installer because we have two now. Joost's installer became the official one because he discussed with us (e.g. http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-devel@lists.lyx.org/msg94538.html ) every aspects of the installer, including bundling issues, and produced something as promised. At that time, most of the developers preferred a clean installer without lots of add-ons. Uwe's installer, although started before Joost's, lost the competition for various reasons. Technique merits can be one (Joost has better understanding of NSIS), but failed to follow suggestions from lyx developers was more important. IMHO, Uwe should seek svn privilege from the first day he worked on the installer and discuss various issues with others. There would be no second installer if Uwe was working on the official one. I dislike bundling but as I have said, I can live with it if others prefer this way. So the problem was not with the installer itself, rather the inclusion of the installer in the trunk with no obvious intention to merge with the official one.
Uwe, for what it's worth, you certainly have my respect/acknowledgement. I've also seen many other posts from developers that acknowledge your work, so I'm not alone in this.
I do respect all the work Uwe has done, but that does not mean I like his detached work on his installer. His work could be a lot more efficient if he could work directly on the official one. (I agree that svn access was a problem.)
My impression is that a majority of the developers are *for* letting Uwe keep his stuff in SVN, regardless of other issues. (The developers against would be Bo and possibly Joost).
I did not have this impression, but this is irrelevant. What Uwe should have done was 1. announce that he would like to put his installer in the trunk 2. I would object but others might not 3. take appropriate action according to the outcome of 2. If Uwe is still interested in putting his installer in the trunk, he can start from 1 now. You have seen many times that I changed my mind after I announced something like: I will change my mind if I get three objections (and I usually got enough objections. :-) Bo
