OK, here am I again with a new approach to the menu merging issue.
With the patch below, everything should be fine, except that you'll
see an ugly but empty "special" menu in the menubar. I have ideas to
get rid of it, we'll see whe/if the rest works.

The new approach is to put the menu items that we want to merge in a
separate dummy menu and hope that this will be enough to populate LyX
menu and avoid further merging.

Bennett, I'd be interested to know how well it fares.

It works well. Everything seems to be in the right place, and all the
menu options in the standard LyX menu work as expected.

The extra menu shows up as "LyX" on the far right, and it has one item:
Quit.

Is it better when the 'LyX' menu is on the left side?
Or should we rename the 'File' into 'LyX'?
When could also we rename Exit into Quit and move
Preferences to the 'LyX'.

Peter -

I think Jean-Marc knows what to do here. The standard LyX menu on the left belongs there. The extra LyX menu on the right is one he intends to delete. (The Quit option on the right is also in the left LyX menu, where it belongs.)
