I tried scons and it worked. But I couldn't convince lyx to print any math symbol on the screen. Every time I tried, I got "GetFontMetrics() failed" or a similar message (and before that "Diplay device is not initialized, aborting" -- as far as I recall).
Next time try to compile it in debug mode (Scons let you do that also). When you get a crash, break the process and just copy and send the contents of the "Call stack" window.
I'll try it again today or tomorrow: when i open Levon's document with 1.4, even scrolling was terribly slow,
I haven't touched scrolling yet so you won't find any improvement here or maybe a bit (who knows ;-)).
