For a time difference I think so yes. But we can do cast to double and use the math.h version if you are affraid of that. Or we can even implement our own template based abs().

On x86 (not sure about the AMD 64 bit extension) long and int are both 64 bits anyway.

err... I meant _32_ bits anyway!
