I don't care where it happens. But I want to be able to set "latin-1" either as a default for all of my documents or in single documents because - I use a package that cannot deal with utf8 - My publisher insists on non-unicode - My coauthor's hasn't installed the latest and greatest LaTeX distribution - I'm working on an old documents that contains ERT and/or preamble definitions not suitable for utf8 Frankly, from what I read on comp.text.tex and de.comp.text.tex, I do not trust very much in LaTeX's current utf8 encoding (as opposed to the traditional encodings), and I'd be relieved if I could just continue using latin-1.
