Yes, but how much of the hassle? That's the question. It's like when
people keep saying a few years back ``why don't you rewrite LyX in
java? Then all you protability problems would be gone!''. It is never
as simple as that.

I think that _if_ this code was written and proved indeed better, it
could be adopted. However, I suspect that writing a parser/writer for
the current format would be easier and give the same result.
