Maybe there is a Better Thing. The current LyX format is far from being
perfect. It works, yes, but it is not as simple as it could be and this
is a major pain when it comes to interoperation with the rest of the
world.
Switch to some XMLish .newlyx format, and part of the hassle will vanish.
We had this LyX-DTD discussion already. I thought nobody objected to
some sensible new format as long as the old one was readable, so maybe
alll it takes is to move that item a bit closer to the top of the ToDo
list...
