I can't type umlauts in plain math mode either, but that's normal and *not*
the problem.
The problem is that, depending on the locale setting, in _math_text_mode_
I *can* type umlauts, work with the with no problems and save them, but then,
reloading them from a file will remove them from the file silently and that's
a bug IMHO.
