The idea is that when you read your document on screen, you see what
the label for some section is, and are likely to remember it when you
want a cross-reference. If some of your labels are not clear
(sec:section, for example :), you would have to look at all the
sections edit their label to search for the right one.
I agree however that in 1.1, we should be able to completely hide the
fact that there is a label...

I one of the wise people you seem to know is able to tell me how to
make sense of the GNUS manual and use gnus just to read mail, things
might improve...
