yes. I then put the lyx window so that the bottom bar & message box
are in the bottom row of screens, the labelbar and most of the menubar
are in the top virtual screen, and only the buttons (which I'd like to
remove) and the text appear on the screen, giving me a tad more room.

It's 3x3.

I'm running 2.0.46; I don't think debiean has a more recent
release availalble, and I haven't a clue how I'd cross-compile a .deb
from my freebsd box. I suppose i could do it from my boss's debian box.

which changelogs?

and is there a -debug level that would generate useful information but
stel let lyx run fast enough on my little 486?

I've gone home early three nights in the last two weeks over not beeing
able to see the screen well enough to work (tired eyes running a lot),
so I've pulled the laptop out for it's nice, crisp, active matrix
screen. . . . But it's *so* slow. It can run lyx fine, but latex &
postscript become a joke. SO I write on it, and then have to take the
floppy to a dark side machine to ftp to the desktop, since my floppy's
gone south far enough that attempting to write then dismount kills off
freebsd . . .
