  Interesting question really. It would seem logical that moving on
  to the next version would actually help solve some of the bugs/misfeatures,
  since code gets rewritten, simplified, formalized, reviewed, whatever.
  I would emphasize though, to quote you. "mathed is such a fine editor" 
  It is precisely that. It is so fine that I use it 4 or 5 hours a day
  and do things with mathematics that I couldn't possibly dream of otherwise,
  so it would seem to warrant significant attention to clean up the numerous
  small bugs/misfeatures. On the other hand I've been using Lyx since
  the beginning and I notice that these things do get fixed, so I guess 
  the moral of the story is:
  Mathed is great, and as Michelangelo, while painting the Sistine Chapel, 
  used to say to the priest in response to his query,
  "I will be finished when I'm finished.
