Actually, I think that WP will only enhance LyX's prospects. It will
attract new users to Linux. Following the maxim, "don't knock it til
you've tried it", I downloaded WP8. I like the web publishing stuff.
That will make my life easier. For writing, I will stick to LyX. Alice
uses WP5.1 on an ancient dos box, but I am trying to get her new machine
set up by Christmas. She's allergic to mice :) and was totally
unimpressed with WP8, but likes LyX. The "free" version of WP8 provided
very little in fonts and not much in the way of docs---so, yes, I will
take the bait and order the full monty.
On another note, in my upgrading quest, something trashed TeTeX-4 as I
was attempting to switch it to glibc. I ended up downloading the -9
snapshot, and that fixed my problems and solved many others as well. The
texmf.cnf is much smarter about pointing to local and per user tex
directories so it found the stuff in /usr/local/share/lyx/tex and
/home/garst/.lyx/tex. du on /usr/local/teTeX showed about 83Mb compared
to 43 with teTeX-4, and LyX seems much faster with font generation.
Now I ask, if a newcomer to Linux installs a LaTeX pkg and ghostscript,
and gets WP8,
then why wouldn't they try go for the tiny extra space required by LyX?
I'll bet that Amir's mom will prefer LyX.
HTML2LyX and LyX2HTML would be nice :)
