I use those myself.  But the European keymap is supposed to make all
of this unnecessary:  Let LyX provide a general solution to the problem
that works even if you X11 keyboard setup is foobar.
The European keymap provides a way for keyboards that are not set up
properly to get the accented chars.  Obviously, it would be advantageous
to enable this for all chars.
I'm just saying that this is not possible, since we don't have emulation
for the compose key feature in LyX yet.  (I'm not saying that we should
have that.)

Instead, I think that we should add a pop-up with the entire character
set where people can use the mouse to select the strange characters that
they only use once in a life-time.  (If you use them more often, you
should set up your keyboard correctly.)
