The main LyX tree does not support 2-byte characters, but at some point in
time, there was an optional patch available that added this to LyX.
I'm sorry that I've lost the link, but maybe someone on the list has it?
The plan in the highly experimental (read: unstable) develop branch is to add
Unicode support.
