I'm making the argument that our existing variable set, in Edit->Paper, is
an odd subset presented in an anti-LaTeX manner.

Actually, the *last* thing you want is people mucking around with the
Save_Layout_as_default settings when they're getting to know LyX.

It's really a shame we have only one "default" setting, which is woefully
inadequate. There should be a menu screen. On the menu, always and
forever, you should be able to select the "default" for whatever
documentclass is current. You should then have saved settings, organized
on the screen by name *and* their associated package, available for
recall.

In the spirit of "A Modest Proposal", may I suggest we at least add a
"Reset Default Layout" function at the end of the Edit->Layout menu?
So we can help users revert to LaTeX's true defaults after they've made
lots of experimental changes?

Best regards
