I had a look at the grub.cfg and it looked OK, but I don't have any  
experience in this.

I tried to re-install grub...

grub-install /dev/sda

which gave the response that /boot/grub/stage1 file not read correctly.

If I look at /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab I note there is no /boot, but I  
really don't know if that matters.

What info do I need to get that will give (someone who knows about this  
stuff) a clear picture of what has to be done to fix this ?
