It would be better if you have the livecd or install cd, but you can also use other livecd as well e.g. knoppix.
root (hdx,y) setup (hdx) x is the mbr usually points to hd0. y is the partition where your grub stage 1 is, just press the tab key to auto-complete. Let us know if it works.
