Thanks for the prompt reply and apologies for attaching my enquiry to the 
Lubuntu-users Digest message. When it comes to mailing lists, I don't quite 
understand how Thunderbird works. 

Is there something unusual about those packages or is this a change in policy? 
It has been my experience since 6.06 that, unlike Windows, Linux usually does 
not need a restart with software updates. I don't know about other people, but 
once I get my desktop layout the way I want it, I'm in no hurry to restart and 
some of my PCs run for several days or even months without a restart.
