First let me say that I fully support the development of a respectful and logically consistent way to name LoCo teams. I am positive that as a group we can arrive at such a solution. Given that I do see some issues with the current suggestion put forth in the original email. I would recommend including the use of the word 'state' for US States because this will help avoid conflicts such as: New York (the City) vs. New York (the state) Washington (the City) and Washington (the state) Kansas (the city) and (Kansas (the state) Iowa (the City) and Iowa (the state) I know in my state that there are some folks (not me) that have a rather adverse reaction to simply using New York due to the fact people usually take that to mean from New York City. For my part it makes no difference to me, but I have no desire to offend people from New York State. I am not sure if people with other name conflicts feel the same way about their named pair. My sense is that we should respect these possibilities and out of respect adopt a naming convention that does not cause such possible reactions. As an example of the historic tensions in my state I advert your attention to the wiki article on Secession in New York - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secession_in_New_York When this issue was raised with my state I sent an email to the list asking folks about it and received seven responses here are two of the comments that are examples of some of the tensions. "I think dropping the State would alter the way the group is perceived to the determent of the group." "I live on Long Island and I feel like upstate NY is a completely different state than the city or island." ---- suggestion ---- Allow the loco team to choose the name of their 'region'; which allows for New York State, Washington State, etc. ---- clarification requested ---- Will previously grandfathered city locos be disbanded? (Chicago, Dallas, Vancouver) Thanks, Charles
