I have another idea for improving this guide: mention Ubuntu Tweak - ubuntu-tweak.com It's a user friendly app for tweaking various things in Gnome/Ubuntu, it is also able to install additional software in an elegant way (unlike Automatix/Ultamatix which should never be recommended to anyone).
