I think you're underestimating the ability of people to sign up to new resources without a coherent "need". Social networking sites are fashionable, and there are plenty of them. But I don't think a new networking site for each potential hobby (Ubuntu, soccer, tapestry work) is going to help. As for community interaction in Ubuntu, following this along with the sounder mailing list, and the community area of the forums, not to mention the equivalent resources for my local team, is going to be one burden more than I need.
