Talking about the "Kiosk Computers," we are hoping to find some that use a web-based search tool rather than a home-grown application. As far as we know, there are no GPL'd linux apps to replace this role and as a team we certainly don't have the man-power to code one up for them. Obviously, this could be a major breakpoint in our strategy. Really, I think the easiest place to start conversion would be in the labs. It's a great place to show off Edubuntu software and demonstrate how a thin-client (LTSP) could give the computer a clean slate every time someone logs in. Many libraries re-image their computers already on a reboot, but they're using extremely expensive software to do this (which also runs quite sluggishly I might add). That on top of the fact that Ubuntu supports TONS of languages makes it an ideal candidate for libraries in the Denver area (and probably many other areas of the US and World) since it can change languages on the fly at the login screen. Getting Ubuntu CDs and Books into the libraries is a great idea too Steve, and we'll definitely be pursuing that. Are the locations that are in contact with you willing to put a stack of Ubuntu CDs up at the counter? We saw a major opportunity in placing Ubuntu CDs at the counters of book stores and libraries with a small sign targeting the "Computer Freedom & Information Freedom" idea; it could be a big hit with the type of crowd keen to those locations.
