Hi Jono and Richard, I believe the upcoming Telecenter Project in Pakistan and the newly adopted ICT education culture in both public and private schools within the country offers an opportunity to step in and provide curriculum & non-curriculum ICT education through FOSS?
The same should apply to other South Asian and Asian Pacific regions that should be a major target for the LoCoTeamEducation support programme and Canonical's Education Programme. Pakistan should be in the list for the programme and we are here to join you for taking up this initiative here, I may be able to invite Intel Pakistan to partner and work with us. Here are the ICT Indicators for Pakistan. These have been compiled by the Pakistan ICT Policy Monitor (APC and BytesForAll Network): Pakistan's Basic ICT Profile Items Value Population 158394000 * GDP (US dollar) 2005 US $ 110.7 (2005) + GDP Growth Rate 6.6 % (2005-06) + Adult literacy rate (age 15 or above) 53 % + Adult literacy rate Male 60 % + Adult literacy rate female 40 % + MDGs Target for Literacy till 2015 80% + Human Development rank 135th ^ Human Development Index (HDI) value 0.527 ^ Telecom Sector share in GDP (%) 1.9 (2004-05) ** Foreign Direct Investment in Telecom Sector 28.24 ** Total telephone subscribers (fixed) as of July 2006 5,240,012 ** Total telephone subscribers (mobile) as of July 2006 39,184,447 ** Tele-density (total) 4.05 ** Tele-density mobile Phones 29.38% ** Tele-density Fixed Lines 25.22 ** Total Internet Service Providers 131 ** Total Internet users on dial up 2.40 million ** Total DSL subscribers 26,611 ** Length of Fibre Optic Link 5227 km ** Total FM Radio Licenses Issued 86 # FM Radios (On-air) 51 # Total Campus FM Radios 16 # Female only Campus FM Radios 2 # Total Household TV Sets 24 million # Satellite Private Television licenses issued 16 # Satellite Private Televisions (on-air) 12 # Satellite Television viewer ship (Urban) 11 million # Satellite Television viewer ship (Rural) 03 million # Cable TV Licensees 1301 # * Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) <www.statpak.gov.pk> + Government of Pakistan <www.finance.gov.pk> ^ Human Development Report-UNDP <www.hdr.undp.org> ** Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) <http://www.pta.gov.pk> # Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) <www.pemra.gov.pk> Compiled at: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/pakistanictpolicy/message/48 Regards ----------------------- Fouad Riaz Bajwa Team Leader Ubuntu-Linux Pakistan LoCo Team Cell: 92-333-4661290 Tel: 92-42-5030039 E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] URL: www.ubuntu-pk.org Mailing List: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-pk Disclaimer: This e-mail message is intended for its recipient only. One key area that many of you are interested in is Education. What can be better than getting our children and students using free software? Not only is this a ripe challenge, but one where LoCo teams can make a real difference. I have been talking to Richard Weideman who is Canonical's Education Programme Manager, and he has an intense, almost yoda like excitement about education. Evidently Richard is a great person to work with LoCo teams to help us get *buntu in places where people learn. To kick things off, head over to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeamEducation and give it a read. It provides some things to think about when it comes to education. Feel free to flesh out the page with ideas, thoughts and technique for getting free software in education. We are also looking to appoint an education contact for each LoCo team. Not all teams will have them as not everyone is interested in education, but if your team is, reply to this thread to indicate your interest.
