Yes, I was able to force a reinitialization by removing and
re-inserting the battery and indeed the device seems to be working
again. So there doesn't seem to have been any permanent file-system
corruption. I wish, though, that I knew better how to track down the
source of the original problem (sudden autism on the part of the
camera while connected to the USB port).
