Does rebooting or 'echo 100000 > /proc/sys/kernel/perf_event_max_sample_rate' fix the problem? Perf throttling might have lowered your sample rate so low that you can't do anything any more. Though if you are running the latest from Linus a lot of fixes should be in there to minimize that problem. What processor are you on?
