I think it would help if you explain on how the firmware download for your UART 
devices work. I have the feeling we need a bit better core handling in this 
case and not end up hacking it in this way.

Why is this if { } else if {} if you always use return to leave the function. 
Just break out of the function and don't bother with this heavy nesting.

I am not a big fan of this overwrite from modules parameters. Also if not set, 
the driver should be able to pick the right firmware.
