If you have enough advanced notice to be elsewhere, why not just carry the hard disk with you? When my wife, kids and I evacuated Reseda, California, four hours after the "Northridge Quake", which was really centered in Reseda six blocks from our apartment, we grabbed checkbooks, credit cards, a couple changed of clothes, and my last backup, and drove 350 KM out of town to where the ground wasn't shaking. Earthquakes don't destroy backups, but the looting that often follows does.
