Is there any CSS (like DVD) that needs to be taken into account? Blu-Ray has a 'stronger' encryption system which supposedly also allows for replacing the encryption keys, there are quite a few encryption keys known and if I'm not mistaken vlc starting verion 2 supports blu-ray and hd-dvd. However the heavier encryption does mean that decrypting in software instead of leveraging the hardware requires much beefier hardware. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/BluRayAndHDDVD http://askubuntu.com/questions/140080/playing-blu-ray-using-vlc
> 2. Regions, like in DVD? Did you honestly expect the MPAA to learn from it's mistakes? They did reduce the amount of regions a bit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Region_codes > 3. Are Blu-Ray burners available today for reasonable prices? define reasonable, an internal Blu-Ray drive costs several times the price of a DVD drive but prices have dropped a lot, in Israel a quick check shows you can get them for under 500NIS these days. > 4. Are Blu-Ray players and burners currently supported by Linux - for > files, audio and video? It seems programs exist to do it.... https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CD_Burning http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2089952 > 5. Any other Linux-related features I should be on the lookout for? Don't have it myself so can't tell you, barely ever burn a CD so don't see a reason to swicth to Blu-Ray. If you intend to use it for long term backup please be aware that optical media deteriorates over time, so you either need to verify the data periodically or re-burn periodically.
