I have two another suggestions (run from root):

1.
    kill `lsof -t /dev/dsp` `lsof -t /dev/snd/* `
    alsa reload

   test with:

   echo 1 2 3 4 5 6 7  > /dev/dsp

2. tweak gnome-sound-properties
