1. you was referring to 'the old one', which is the old one, PS II or Mac ?
2. can one run linux on PS II ? ( i can get a used one here for 100 EURO),
is there somthing like xebian for PS II ?

There are other options, such as the playstation II, or PCI PPC Macintosh.
The old ones take laptop RAM, ide hard drives and have a 2 USB 1 ports
and ethernet port and a 56k modem. They have no fan and you can turn off
the monitor via software. Many of them are being given away because the
clock stopped working, which is repaired with a couple of screw drivers
and a 30 NIS lithium battery, available at any camera store.
If you don't want to mess with Linux, the native operating system is
based upon BSD (it is partialy open source) and many of the programs
developed or ported to Linux have been ported to it. It fits very nicely
into an existing Linux network.
WHith any computer, it's not always the fan, in several computers I
have, the hard drive is noisier than the fan.
If you don't need something fast, an old laptop may do.
