You are welcome to license something you create anyway you wish to. Most
people find that BSD's artistic license is better for their wants and needs,
both of which are relatively recent. I started giving away programs I wrote
back in the late 1960's, and people were doing it before me for around
20 years. 

I may be a little touchy about it, the first known (to me) case of someone
stealing my code (taking a program I wrote, changing the date and putting
his name on it) was in June, 1973. 

To keep this relevant to Linux, there are also sorts of accomodations made
in the Linux Kernel and applications for varying sofware licenses. Just because
the Kernel itself is GPL, that does not prevent someone from writing a module
that is BSD licensed, totaly freeware, or even OCO (Object code only).
