ira is right on. but imho the linksys wrt54g is the best - its about 70$ (i..e about 300 nis) runs linux and if you download the sveasoft firmware
you have a lot of extras, better performance and some QoS for Voice and data

1. Do I need a wireless HUB, or can two wireless cards communicate with one another directly?
like any old 10BaseT, they can speak directly if you swap transmit and recieve.
3. What recommended PCI cards are there that work with Linux? This is irrelevant, of course, if I have to have a HUB, as I'm sure an Ethernet card will cost me less.
option 1: a wireless USB plug. I actually have one I'm not using since I got a Wifi laptop, if you want to buy. they cost 120-250 NIS depending on make and speed.
Option 2: a wireless PCI card - not cheaper, and these days PCI slots are more expensive than USB ports, your choice. I think they are also around 250 NIS. As with the earlier option, your desktop has to do bridging or NAT+DHCP to act as a conveniant access point, freeing you from configuring this yourself when you move between environments.
Option 3: an access point (what you call a wireless hub). it can bridge your connection or act as a full-featured dialup gateway, DHCP server, NAT and more. those from Lynksys and Edimax run linux on them, some also have 4 port switches built in. they cost around 400 NIS and up.
Option 4: find a dumb neighbour who left his access point open :-)
