Hi all,
I want to set up a wireless network. A few questions:
1. Do I need a wireless HUB, or can two wireless cards communicate with
one another directly?
That's called an "ad hoc" network. IMHO you are much better off buying
a cheap router.
Note that you may use only channels 4-8 and if you use an external
antenna to increase gain, you must reduce power by the same amount.
You can also run an application called "host app", but it's not
worht it IMHO. Routers are cheap enough.
Always use WEP (encryption) 64 bit is good enough. It is NOT to
keep your data secure, don't ever assume that it will be,
but to keep people from using your network to send spam or
"share" kidde porn.
You also have to setup an access list to prevent other people to connect
to your lan. (not in adhoc mode)
There are so many unprotected networks out there that anyone looking
for a network to steal bandwith from, will just go on to the next
instead of cracking yours.
If you want to add wireless to an existing network, just turn off
the DHCP server on the router, assign the lan side of it a static IP
in your range and plug your network into the LAN side of the router.
2. What recommended PCMCIA cards are there that work with Linux?
None. The old "tried and true' are not sold here and many of the
new ones are not supported, However the EDIMAX white USB dongle
works wonderful and is well supported under linux.
3. What recommended PCI cards are there that work with Linux? This is
irrelevant, of course, if I have to have a HUB, as I'm sure an Ethernet
card will cost me less.
Same as above.
Geoff.
