Well, Ubuntu does has KDE packages, it's just that they need to be explictly 
installed and that its default desktop is GNOME. So it's not an issue in this 
regard.

As for Gentoo, I'd recommend against it. First of all the compiler flag thing 
does not hold, because you still need to compile the package to test it. 
Secondly, in Gentoo a package upgrade means a re-compilation, which is time 
consuming and annoying.
