Did you consider or try lyx? It's quite different from regular
wordprocessors, and is not an office suit but only a WP, some say
better than the others, and its equation editor seems at least
reasonable. I did not work too much with it and not with the others,
so I can't judge.

Then I think lyx will be a much easier start than OOo or KOffice, as
it's much smaller. But I do not recommend you do that :-)
