I do support lyx like other people here said. If you go that way, its worth your while to learn how to add hotkeys to your favorite math symbols and learn some latex, get you moving quicker. As for latex, OOo math equation editor is somewhat similar to latex (different syntax, but similar ideas), learning the command can save you some time typing in equations.
