what do you mean by recognise ?

try answereing these questions:
1) is my disk supported ?
[google, Hardware compatibility lists etc.]

2) do i have USB support in the kernel ?
[u need to have USB support, mass storage support, and an appropriate
USB interface (ohci/uhci)
if not, get it working.[probably kernel recompilation is required]

3) are the appropriate modules & filesystems loaded/supported by my kernel ?

if not supported - recompile the kernel with the required modules support
if not loaded - load them with insmod/modprobe

the USB disk. When the laptop is running in Windows with the docking station,

When I work in Linux everything is fine. I see the disk, I can mount the disk and I have no problems. It is only when I connect the laptop to a docking station that I cannot see the disk.
