Though I maybe mis-reading it. As a simlpe test, run: xinit /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm or: xinit /usr/X11R6/bin/twm (or whatever: a full path to some X client. Must begin with '/') See if this doesn't crash immedietly. If soo, you should see how to get your server working with KDE.
