I've had that problem on my first WiFi installation (when I bought my first WiFi card and AP). It turned out the card was at fault - I then bought a better (Orinico gold) card and I can now use my AP from every corner of the house at very good speeds. The fact that you only get 6Mbs at close range means that something is indeed wrong with either your AP or your card. Other things to check: - Are there thick walls that may weaken the signal? (in August Penguin, about half way through the day I realized the conference room the AP was in had shelter-like cement walls, and thus the signal was barely usable outside the room. This is a good opportunity to apologize to all those that expected WiFi and were dissappointed). Some people have an indoor shelter (MAMAD) which serves as a work room. That is not the ideal location for the AP, as the walls are usually thick enough to weaken the signal considerably. - Are there any electric lines in the walls that may interfere with the signal? (I'm not talking about the casual electric line that goes through your walls, but on a thick electricity grid) Luckily, debugging is easy. Borrow an AP from someone and check it with your card. Then borrow a WiFi card from someone and check it with your AP. You'll then know who's at fault. -- "It was only a one liner. A semi-illiterate chipmunk could've written it.
