From a user POV, open source drivers are infinitely better than closed
source drivers, and closed source drivers are some what better than no
drivers at all.

Yes, you should buy hardware that is supported. You should also tell
the vendor why you bought from them, and you should tell the other
vendors why you didn't buy from them. That sends a clear message to
vendors, that they *lose* *sale* because they don't release open
source drivers. 

Idealistic? perhaps. It works.
