Regarding switch types, I've worked mostly with Intel and Cisco switches,
they both have configuration abilities like the ones I specified before and
many more, a good switch can have the abilities of a simplified router.
regarding the specific problem with the connection speeds, unlike the hub,
the switch is designed to logically pass packets , meaning keep them alive,
the problem can occur when a switch is miss configured (when configuration
is possible as I understand, you're speaking of the first non-configurable
switch I know of)
or when the problem isn't in the switch itself, meaning the NIC's are not
able to work well together as a switch will try and pass a 100MBit packet to
a 10MBit card but the card must be configured so it can receive it without
loosing touch (that's part of the duplex that keeps occurring in this list).
in general, since the switch is non-configurable, either replace it or start
working on the card which is cheaper to replace in the worst case.

Isn't a switch considered more sophist acted device then a hub?
Can you give pointers for what you wrote?
Can you specify manufactures models in case you are considering equipment
you
are familiar with?
