If that is what you want - you should probably run a local X server (use
WeirdX if you run windows and can't get a better X server), ssh to the
target machine (make sure compression is on and X forwarding is on), run
your favorite X app, and it will show up in your local X server.
The atvantage of this over vnc is that you can run a local window manager,
which is very handy if your connection to the target machine is not very
good.
And as a bonus you get compression and encryption of your connections.
