Which part of the functionality: the client? the server (host)? the whole
system?

If you want to remotely control a windows machine from another (possibly
unix) machine - you can use vnc. Although it lacks many of the features
pcaw has (i.e. - there's only one password).

Not entirely correct: pcaw lets you see exactly what the user sees on
his/her display. This can be useful sometimes (for instance - you're
trying to give technical support, and you cannot count on the user to
properly describe the problem).

Also - what if you cannot run two instances of that program on the same
machine, and the user already runs one of them?

Is there any remote-control client for X?
