i've been running a configuration with a linux box running as the NIS
master, and some sunos 4.X + solaris 2.X running as NIS clients. it worked
ok (except that the specific linux box crashed often, due to hardware
problems). i think that one problem i encountered there was that i had to
specify the name of the NIS server on all machines - using broadcast to
locate the NIS server did not work properly. i'm not sure if it was an IP
configuration problem, or that it just did not work properly. the server
should be added under the /var/yp/binding/<domain>/ypservers file. the
system involved was a red-hat 4.2 box - and i think i needed to download
newer RPMs of ypserv etc. in order to get things to work - not sure
though..
eventually i needed to move the NIS server to a more stable
machine, and had to move it to a SunOS machine - according to solaris's
man pages, it appears that the NIS+ server on solaris (when running in NIS
compatibility mode) is not fully compatible with NIS. for example, you
cannot add any non-standard maps. since our configuratin uses amd, and
uses a set of NIS maps to deliver the maps data - running a NIS master on
solaris was out of the question. but as a client to a NIS server, it had
no special problems (i only modified the name of the NIS server, and added
it to /etc/hosts).
hope this helps,
guy
