no I wonder if this is a sign this list is too static or if it's just
deeply rooted culture :-)
Hello friends, Komerade Fish advised me we are now (somewhat) spam
proof, so I decided to give the list a shot again. I miss the community,
I can tell you ;)

question... Comdex is coming this week, and it says there's a little
speach by a linux-il member (I still recommend renaming to GILI, btw,
ILUG still sounds horrible in Hebrew, and we could really use some good
PR)
I see Eli Marmor is looking for someone in the archives, but there is no
reply to that thread. I would have volunteered myself if I wasn't so
long detached from the list, linux-il activities (are there any?) and
the Linux industry in Israel (plus I have school that day :)

I think we should wise up and start a newbie help group. This list has
not been doing enough for the promotion of Linux in Israel I believe. If
there was enough information floating around, we would have had
awareness. maybe Qtext would have been ported? maybe some more people
would have helped create a Logical-Hebrew for gTk+ and Qt? I visited
LinuxWorld in San Jose in March, and talked to one of the GNOME guys
from Red Hat who was slowly doing the Hebrew widgets' logics, and I was
surprised to hear there were no Israelis on the team! sounds rediculous,
doesn't it?
okok, just so you won't attack me for being such a major crittic in this
first post, I'll tell you what _I_ am going to do. I'm setting up this
week a fast server for the soul purpose of mirroring everything linux,
opensource and free software to Israel. we need a local mirror of the
major distros (as disk space allows at the first stage) and the kernel,
then other usefull stuff, as well as a central site for linuxdoc and
other website mirrors as well. HOPEFULLY the server will be up and
running by the thursday lecture (which I guarantee you will pull
listeners!) and we can advertise the address at the lecture and on the
linux-il website (who's the interrim webmaster these days?)

ehm... Vadik, there's a slight contradiction to the above mentioned here
:-)

is there one planned? I saw nothing on the website... did anyone invite
Mr. Hall to speak for us next week since he happens to be in Israel?

I don't suppose we open a booth at Comdex :-(
will any company allow us to take up a corner in their booth, or are we
at least handing linux-il blurbs?

ehh... umm... yeah :-)
well, I'll work on that mirror server, I hope I'll find more time to
push other things as well with time...
for those who missed me and wondered where I was: I returned from
California about 7 months ago, I now live in Ra'anana (looking for a
roommate!!), started studying for a B.A. in CS (you saw that
coming...) and work part time as a unix sysadmin (we need more people,
resumes please?). other than that I'm at my same old address(es),
electronicly.
Glad to be back,
Ira Abramov
