if you'll read the faq carefully, you should not have any problem.
i have configured NIS on 5 stations + 1 server in 1 hours + 2 reading 
all the documentations.

basically the current implementation that i have installed
(the one that came with RH6.0) does not support shadowed passwords.

the best thing todo is to make the NIS server a NFS server too
that will export the homedirs of the users. that is ofcourse
there is enough hd space and horsepower on the server to be.
