If you have only Microsoft Windows workstations (i.e. Win3.1, wfw, Win95, Win98)
or DOS,
you can configure Samba to handle network logons (just like Windows NT).
This option is fairly attractive if you have the mentions workstations.

I run a Red Hat server on a 10 user network attached to a wan.
This server functions as a file-server (which also supplies network services like
DHCP, WINS, DNS), a print queue holder for print servers, and a remote access
server.
It has the optional capabilites of becoming an internet gateway, a proxy server, a
mail
server and a firewall.
Even with the current functionality, nothing can beat the ease of connectivity and
avaliability
of remote control over the server through the wan.

BTW - have no fear in using a server for more users.
My load average is 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 :-)
